The only option was the Baltic, which was controlled by Sweden.

Invasion of Sweden
Peter the Great thought that Charles XII is weak and easily defeated. Denmark and Poland assisted him.
Charles XII quickly defeated the Danes and the Poles in the Battle of Narva, Russia was still standing.
Danes and Poles were no longer there for Russia, Russia was alone.

Battle of Poltava
Peter the Great invaded Sweden, fought back against Charles XII's military.
Peter the Great defeats Charles' army, and takes a commanding lead of the Great Northern War.
Essentially won the war at this battle, still dragged on for 12 more years before the formal recognition of the war ending.

Peter the Great defeats Charles XII's army.
